Have you gotten used to the number on the scale creeping up each year? According to a study by the New England Journal of Medicine, the average person gains almost one pound each year (3.35 pounds over four-year periods, to be exact). That might not seem like much, but it adds up to almost 17 pounds in 20 years. So, if you’re a happy 130 pounds today, you could wake up one day and weigh 147 without even realizing it.
Is it possible to avoid that pesky pound each year? Of course! Try a few of these tips to keep the scale steady (or even drop a few pounds).
- Don’t drink your calories. There’s a lot of sugar hidden in drinks, and all that sugar equals extra calories. Try not to drink diet drinks, either, if at all possible. The fake sugar could make your body crave the real stuff—but even if it doesn’t, it’s not adding anything good to your body.
- Do some form of movement each day. No, I’m not recommending a workout 7 days per week, but I am recommending you do something active each day. Aim for 3–6 days of exercise per week and then do another activity like a walk or a bike ride on your days off. Not in the mood to work out? Ask yourself to recall the last time you regretted a workout. Got nothing? Do the first five minutes of your workout and then decide if you’re really not up for finishing.
- Mix up your routine. Doing the same workout every day isn’t doing your body any favors, because it works the same muscles in the same ways day in and day out. As your body gets used to the routine, you probably won’t continue to see results, and your mind will just get bored. Not fun! If you’re doing Fast Fitness to Go’s program, then you’re all set because you receive new workout videos each month. If you’re not on the program, just make sure you’re changing up your routine about every 4 weeks. According to a Self magazine survey, 71% of respondents say they almost never try a new routine. Don’t follow their lead!
