It’s easy to get caught up in all the hoopla of the latest health trends. Some of them actually deserve all the hype they get, but here are three health trends that should be avoided at all costs.
- Extreme Diets: Yes, they’re still being created and followed every day. In just the last few months, I’ve seen extreme diets such as “eat whatever you want for 8 hours and then fast for 16 hours” and “only eat foods on this list.” I’ve said this before, but everyone really is different. What you put in your mouth should not be trendy; it should make you feel fantastic. The CDC has studies showing that extreme calorie restriction can even cause sudden death. If that’s not a good enough reason to avoid extremes, I don’t know what is.
- Equipment Galore: There seems to be a new piece of workout equipment produced every hour these days. Sure, I’m a bit biased, because I focus on equipment-free workouts. In general, I do think equipment can be effective and fun if used properly. However, equipment can cause more harm than good if you don’t know how to use it. It’s very easy to get injured by not using equipment properly. So before you add another piece of gear to your home gym, make sure you know how to use it. Better yet, stick with the best piece of equipment around—your body! Your next best option is having someone at the store or at your gym show you how to use your new purchase.
- Working Out Every Single Day: Lately I’ve been coming across programs that ask you to work out seven days a week and offer promises of a great body if you can just keep up with their schedule. There are two problems with this. #1 Most people can’t keep up with the schedule, get disappointed, and give up. #2 The few who can keep up with the schedule usually end up getting hurt. Muscles need time to rebuild themselves. If you’re working out every day, they can’t do that. Please give your body at least one day to rest each week. Your rest day will do more for your health and fitness than any workout possibly could.
