Cinco de Mayo

margaritasAlthough Cinco de Mayo is the celebration of the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France, many people just use it as a reason to drink margaritas and eat nachos. Don’t worry, I’m not going to tell you to skip the fun stuff next week; I’m just going to give you some tips for not totally wrecking your good habits.

You can still eat and drink your favorites; just try these healthier versions instead.

Lighter Margaritas

  • Regular
  • Makes one margarita.
    -2 ounces tequila
    -2 tablespoons lime juice
    -1 tablespoon agave (or to taste)
    Pour over ice or blend with a handful of ice.

  • Mango
  • Makes one margarita.
    -2 ounces tequila
    -1/2 fresh mango or 1/3 cup frozen mango
    -2 tablespoons lime juice
    -Agave to taste (if your mangos are sweet enough, you might not need any at all)
    Combine all ingredients in a blender. Add a handful of ice if using fresh mango.

Lighter Nachos
Makes one serving.
-15 tortilla chips of your choice
-1/4 pound cooked lean ground beef, shredded chicken, or ground turkey; or 1/2 cup black or pinto beans
-1/4 cup shredded cheddar or pepper jack cheese
-2 tablespoons Greek yogurt
-2 tablespoons salsa
-1/4 avocado, diced
Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
Place tortilla chips in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or sprayed with cooking spray.
Top the chips with cooked meat or beans and shredded cheese.
Bake for 5 minutes or until cheese is melted.
Remove from oven and top with yogurt, salsa, and avocado.

Try to stick with one drink. If you decide to have more than one, be sure to drink water in between. Schedule a workout before the festivities, too. It’s much easier to keep your food and drinks in check that way because when you work out, your body naturally wants to keep up the good work.
