Do you make these travel mistakes?

travelWhether you love to travel or despise it, leaving home for a few days can easily undo weeks of healthy habits. Getting caught up in being on vacation mode or eating out at fancy restaurants with coworkers and clients can leave you feeling bloated and lethargic in no time.

I’ve traveled a lot over the last decade for both pleasure and work, and found a few strategies that keep travel both fun and healthy.

  • Bring your own food. You don’t need to pack food for every meal, but having a few snacks on hand can prevent you from going overboard on less healthy options. I like to bring nuts and snack bars because they’re easy to eat on the go. Oatmeal is another great option for quick breakfasts. Just use the coffee maker in your room to heat up some water and mix it with the oatmeal in a mug. If you have a fridge in your room, ask your concierge to point you in the direction of the nearest grocery store. Grab some fresh fruit, veggies, and yogurt.
  • Plan your workouts in advance. If you’re a member of Fast Fitness to Go, you just need your smartphone, tablet, or laptop, and a sports bra for the ladies. If you won’t have internet access, be sure to download a few of the workouts before you leave. If you like to walk or run, plan your routes in advance so you’re not stuck searching for a map in the morning as you’re heading out the door.
  • Walk. If you’re on vacation, try a walking tour. If you’re traveling for work and sitting in meetings all day, use your breaks to pace the halls or do a loop around the hotel parking lot. A few quick walks really add up throughout the course of a day. Despite your best efforts, you’re likely eating more than you normally do. Walking is a great way to keep things balanced. Wear a pedometer to keep you honest about how much you’re really moving each day. My personal favorite is the FitBit Flex bracelet.
  • Have some fun. Being in a new city is a great time to relax and explore a new area. Even if you’re in meetings all day, you can usually squeeze in a little sightseeing in the evenings or during breaks. Doing something different is great for reducing stress, which we all know is key to a healthy body.
