For the next five minutes, I want you to focus on anything other than a delicious bowl of greens topped with a little olive oil and balsamic vinegar. You can think about absolutely anything else—the weather, what you’re going to wear tomorrow, an upcoming vacation. Just don’t think about that yummy salad. Could you do it? I didn’t think so.
We’re often told to just not think about whatever it is we’re craving. That strategy tends to backfire though. The more we try not to think about something, the more we end up thinking about it. I’m sure you’ve tried not thinking about the chocolate in your desk drawer or the chips in your cupboard, but it rarely works.
Instead of getting upset with your brain for not doing what it’s told, make it work for you. If you’re in the mood for a cupcake, but know you’ll feel better after chowing down on an apple, tell yourself to not think about that apple. Within a few minutes that sweet, juicy apple will constantly be popping up in your head. Go ahead and indulge guilt-free!
A few other things to stop thinking about:
- your workout
- drinking water
- going to bed at night
This strategy can really work for anything you’re struggling to accomplish, so stop thinking about it already!
