Get Over It

get over it jennyI’ll bet you didn’t know that March 9th was officially Get Over It Day. I’m not sure who creates these so-called official days, but I’m a big fan of this one. I’m such a big fan that I’m going declare this entire week Get Over It Week!

I know it sounds like an insensitive, harsh phrase, but sometimes we do just need to “get over it.” We get upset when the scale goes up a pound or two or five. We feel guilty after downing a big bowl of pasta and a milkshake. We’re frustrated when we’re asked to work late, our schedule is totally thrown off, and there’s no way to do a workout and go to bed early now!

Guess what? Those things are going to happen, and it’s normal to not be happy when they do. However, that doesn’t mean you get to spend the next 24 hours stewing. Get over it! If the number on the scale is moving in the wrong direction, create a plan for getting back on track. Keeping a food journal for a few days is a great place to start. Ate too much? Make sure your next meal is light and balanced. Many people decide to either skip their next meal or just keep eating poorly because the day is ruined now, right?! Please don’t choose either of these options. Treat yourself well and make a good choice at your very next meal. How about a salad with some grilled chicken and an apple for dessert? If your schedule is thrown off, do the best you can. Maybe you can get in a few minutes of stretching before bed. If you know in advance that you’ll have to work late, perhaps you can work out in the morning or during your lunch break.

There are endless ways to get off track, and there are endless ways to get back on track. Whenever you start to feel out of control, gently tell yourself to get over it. Then ask yourself what you’re going to do about it. If you’re not going to do anything, fine. If you’re going to do something to improve your situation, great. Either way, the choice is yours. Whatever you do, there’s no point stewing anymore.
