It’s so easy to convince yourself that you deserve a burger and some ice cream after a tough workout. Unfortunately, even the best workout won’t justify filling your body with junk afterwards. I’m not saying you should never treat yourself, but you certainly don’t want to make it a habit.
I came across a study recently that helps explain why we tend to overeat after exercise, and also offers an idea for how to change our behavior. When participants in the study were told to go for a walk as a form of exercise, they tended to eat more afterwards than those who were told the walk was just a leisurely nature walk.
The concept of thinking about your workout as fun might seem impossible for many of you, but here are a few ideas to get you started:
- Think of your workout as “me time.” You’re doing something just for you, and you deserve it.
- Pretend you’re back in school and your workout is recess. Remember looking forward to recess all morning?!
- Create a new playlist with your favorite songs. Only listen to that playlist when you’re doing your workout.
