I’m no exception. I can be a spectacular whiner. However, over the last year, I’ve made a conscious effort to focus on what’s right in my life. Thinking about what I’m thankful for reduces my stress and helps me focus on moving forward. While it’s easy to feel grateful when something good happens, it’s the rough patches that really require us to focus.
When money seems tight, we need to think about everything we do have instead of focusing on just how scrawny our bank account is these days. Most of us have a roof over our heads, food on our tables, and people who love us. When we’re complaining about doing our workout for the day, we need to remind ourselves how lucky we are to be healthy enough to actually do a workout. When we face personal or professional rejection, we should be thankful that we have the courage to go after our goals despite being rejected.
I think you get the point. No one has a perfect life, but we all have a long list of things that deserve a heartfelt “thank you.” Next time you find yourself venting, or curled up in a ball crying, take a deep breath and think about three things you’re grateful for. You might not feel better instantly, but you’ll be one step closer to a calm and happy life.
