What to Do When You Just Can’t Seem to Get Started

What to do when you just can't seem to get startedMaybe you’re totally new to exercise or maybe you just let your normal fitness routine slide for a few weeks. Whether you’re getting started for the first time or the hundredth time, it can seem like a huge hurdle.

You might be telling yourself you’ll start tomorrow, but somehow tomorrow never seems to get here. Each day the goal of starting seems a bit more challenging than the day before, and soon you’re feeling so discouraged that the task seems impossible.

First, take a deep breath and tell yourself that it’s okay that it’s taken you this long to finally start. Next, congratulate yourself for starting right now. Yes, right now!

Do each of the exercises below as you read them. They can all be done while standing in line, while taking public transportation, or while lying in bed. No excuses. You can do this.

  • Squeeze your butt as hard as you can. Then release.
  • Pull your belly button in towards your spine. Then release.
  • Squeeze your butt as hard as you can. Then release.
  • Pull your belly button in towards your spine. Then release.

You just worked your abs and your butt AND officially started your workout program. Stop telling yourself that a workout needs to be an hour, 30 minutes, or even 5 minutes. The goal is to start and make improvements as you go.

Do this routine again tomorrow. If you’re up for it, add in a third round of butt and belly button squeezes. If not, just do it again and add in something else when you’re ready. If you’re part of my membership program, you have access to 50 full-body workout videos. Don’t worry if you can’t finish an entire video. Just try to finish 30 seconds today. Then finish 35 seconds tomorrow. Before you know it, you’ll be doing a full 25-minute workout video!
